Affiliate Links in YouTube Descriptions: Making Video Partners Actually Convert

Video affiliates send fewer clicks than bloggers but better ones — when the plumbing works. Link placement, coupon codes as tracking, disclosure rules, and why long links die on camera.

A written review gets skimmed; a video review gets watched, sometimes for eleven minutes, by someone actively deciding what to buy. Video partners routinely convert at multiples of blog traffic. They also generate the most tracking complaints of any partner type — because the path from a video to your checkout has more places to break, and because creators do half their promotion in a medium where nobody can click anything: speech.

Getting video partners right is mostly plumbing. Here's the plumbing.

YouTube truncates descriptions behind "...more" after roughly the first three lines. A link below the fold might as well not exist — viewers don't expand descriptions, they glance. Brief your video partners to put the affiliate link in line one or two, before the timestamps, before the gear list, before everything. On mobile (most of YouTube's watch time) that's the difference between one tap and never.

Pinned comments are the second slot: the creator pins a comment with the link right after upload. Comments survive truncation and give the link a second chance at the viewers who scroll down instead of expanding.

Half of video promotion is spoken: "link in the description" works, but "use code MAYA10" works better, because a code survives being heard. Nobody types yourstore.com/?ref=maya-tech-reviews from memory; everybody remembers a coupon code at checkout time, even hours later on a different device.

This makes coupon attribution the natural tracking layer for video partners: issue each one a personal code that both discounts the order and credits the referral. The code catches everyone the link misses — the viewer who watched on a TV, the one who searched your brand the next day, the one whose browser cleared the cookie. If your affiliate setup supports auto-generated per-partner codes, video creators are exactly who that feature exists for.

A short redirect link helps for the spoken URL case: yourstore.com/maya is sayable in a way the raw parameter link never is. Set the redirect to land on the tracked link so credit still flows.

Disclosure is not optional, and it's two-layer

Video reviews with affiliate links need disclosure both in the video (spoken or on-screen — regulators have been explicit that a description-only disclosure isn't enough for endorsements made in the video itself) and in the description text, plus the platform's own paid-promotion checkbox where the arrangement qualifies. Don't leave this to each creator's guesswork: put one approved sentence in your partner kit — "Some links are affiliate links; if you buy through them I earn a commission at no extra cost to you" — and note that honest disclosure doesn't hurt conversion. Audiences expect creators to earn; they punish concealment, not commissions.

Judge video partners on the right window

Video traffic behaves differently from blog traffic, and your reporting should account for it. A blog post's referral curve decays smoothly; a video spikes for 72 hours, then goes quiet — until the algorithm resurfaces it eight months later and a three-year-old review sends you a burst of orders. Two consequences: your cookie duration matters more for video partners (a 30-day window fits how viewers buy after watching; a 7-day window quietly robs them), and a video partner's value is the area under the whole curve, not last month's row in the report. Before concluding a video partner went cold, check whether their old videos are still converting.

The two-line brief that fixes most of it

Almost every video-partner problem traces to instructions that were never given. The fix fits in the partner welcome email: "Link goes in the first two lines of the description and in a pinned comment. Your personal code MAYA10 gives viewers 10% off and credits you even if they never click — say it out loud in the video. Please disclose the affiliate relationship on-screen or verbally, plus one line in the description."

That's the whole system. Video partners who follow it show up in your referral report looking like your best traffic source per click — because, plumbing fixed, that's what they are.
