Self-Hosted vs SaaS Affiliate Software — Cost, Control, and Data Ownership
The real trade-offs between running affiliate software on your own WordPress site and renting a hosted platform — total cost math, data questions, and when each one wins.
Affiliate software comes in two shapes. SaaS platforms host everything on their servers: your affiliates sign up on their domain, tracking runs through their infrastructure, and you pay monthly — often with a percentage cut of affiliate-driven revenue on top. Self-hosted software runs inside your own site: a WordPress plugin, your database, your rules, for a flat license fee.
Neither is universally right. Here's how to think about the choice honestly.
The cost curve bends in opposite directions
SaaS pricing typically starts low and scales with success: a base monthly fee plus tiers keyed to referral volume or revenue, sometimes a literal percentage of tracked sales. When your program is small, that's cheap. When your program works — which is the goal — the bill grows with it. A program driving meaningful five-figure monthly revenue can quietly cost hundreds a month in platform fees.
Self-hosted flips the curve: a flat annual license (Affiliate Factory WP runs $129–$269/year) whether your affiliates drive ten orders or ten thousand. The software's cost approaches zero as a percentage of revenue precisely when the program succeeds. You do supply the hosting — but the tracking load is a cookie and one database write per visit, which your existing WooCommerce server won't notice.
The data question is bigger than the cost question
With a hosted platform, your customer purchase behavior, your affiliates' contact details, and your revenue numbers live in someone else's database, under someone else's privacy policy, in someone else's jurisdiction. That has three practical consequences. GDPR gets harder: you need a data-processing agreement and must answer for a subprocessor you don't control (our GDPR checklist covers this). Migration gets harder: leaving means exporting what they let you export. And continuity is out of your hands: price changes, feature removals, or a shutdown land on their schedule, not yours.
Self-hosted means the entire program — partners, referrals, payout history — sits in your WordPress database next to your orders. Backups, exports, and retention policies are yours. No one can raise the rent on your own house.
Tracking reliability favors first-party
Ad blockers and browser privacy features increasingly block requests to known third-party tracking domains — which is exactly what SaaS affiliate platforms are. First-party tracking (a signed cookie set by your own domain) doesn't trip those filters because there is no third party. As browsers keep tightening (more on the post-third-party-cookie world here), this gap widens.
Where SaaS genuinely wins
Fairness requires the other column. Hosted platforms bring a built-in marketplace of affiliates browsing for offers — useful if you have no audience and no partners in mind. They handle infrastructure for you, which matters if you have no website at all (self-hosted assumes you run WordPress). And some bundle payment disbursement with tax-form handling across many countries, which very large programs appreciate.
If you need a recruiting marketplace more than you need control, a network can be a reasonable supplement — some merchants run both.
The decision in three questions
- Do you already run WordPress/WooCommerce? If yes, self-hosted slots into what you have; if you have no site, SaaS is the only option.
- Do you expect the program to grow? Flat-fee software gets cheaper with scale; percentage-based platforms get more expensive with scale.
- Does data location matter to you (or your lawyers)? EU merchants in particular tend to sleep better with first-party, on-server tracking.
For a WooCommerce store that intends to make affiliates a real channel, the math and the control both point self-hosted. The best way to test that conclusion costs nothing: open the live demo, click through a working self-hosted program, and compare it with any hosted trial side by side.
