Setting Up a WooCommerce Affiliate Program: The 30-Minute Version
The complete first-day setup for a WooCommerce store's affiliate program — rate, pages, tracking test, payout method, first recruit — in the order that avoids rework.
A WooCommerce affiliate program has five moving pieces: a commission rule, two public pages, working attribution, a payout method, and at least one partner. Everything else — tiers, contests, marketing sync, custom fields — is refinement you can add in month two. This is the first-day setup in the order that avoids redoing anything.
Minute 0–5: decide the one number
Your commission rate is the only decision on this list that's hard to change later without partner grumbling, so decide it first and decide it sustainably. Work from contribution margin: product margin minus payment fees, shipping subsidies, support cost, and an allowance for refunds. Whatever survives, share a slice you can defend for years — for typical physical-product stores that lands at 8–15%, digital products higher. A full method is in the commission rates guide; the rule of thumb is start where you can stay.
Set it as a store-wide percentage. Per-product and per-partner overrides exist for later; launch simple.
Minute 5–12: make the two pages
Your program needs exactly two public pages on day one.
The application page — where future partners apply. With Affiliate Factory WP this is one shortcode on a normal WordPress page; add a short paragraph above it saying who the program is for, the rate, and how fast you approve. Honest copy beats hype: "10% on every order you refer, paid monthly, applications reviewed within a business day."
The portal page — where approved partners log in to grab links, see stats, and check payouts. Again one shortcode. Put both pages in your footer; serious partners look for them there.
The program page that converts covers copy in depth, but don't polish today — publish, then improve.
Minute 12–20: test attribution like a skeptic
Before any partner exists, prove the plumbing. Create a test affiliate account (your own second email), grab its referral link, open it in a private browser window, and place a real small order. Then check three things in the admin: the visit was recorded, the order produced a referral, and the commission math on that referral is the number you expect.
Repeat once with a coupon code instead of a link if you'll run coupon attribution — type the code at checkout with no click anywhere in the story, and confirm the sale credits the right partner. Ten minutes of skepticism here prevents the worst launch-week email: a partner asking where their commission went. If anything fails, the tracking docs walk through the usual suspects (caching plugins are most of them).
Minute 20–25: connect the money
Decide how partners get paid before the first one earns anything, because "we'll figure out payouts later" reads as "maybe never" from the partner side. Connect PayPal or Stripe with your own credentials — payouts go straight from your account, with every state change landing in the ledger — or commit to recorded manual transfers on a schedule. Monthly, with a modest minimum ($25–50), is the boring correct answer. Write the schedule on your application page.
Minute 25–30: recruit partner zero
Your first partner is almost never a stranger: it's the customer who already recommends you, the niche blogger you've talked to, the creator who tagged your product last month. Send one personal message — not a campaign — with the rate, the link to apply, and one sentence of why you thought of them. Approving a real application end-to-end also tests your whole pipeline one final time, with stakes.
From here, recruiting becomes the ongoing habit (finding affiliates in your niche is the playbook), and the program mostly runs itself: applications arrive, referrals accrue, the monthly payout takes twenty minutes.
What deliberately isn't on this list
Auto-approval rules, tiered rates, contests, marketing-platform sync, custom application fields, fraud tuning — all real, all month-two. A program that launches simple and pays on time beats a program still being configured. Ship the five pieces, watch the first real referral land, and refine from evidence instead of guesses.
